Bad news for one company is good news for all of it's competitors, and this weekend provided some good news for anyone competing with Microsoft (MSFT). There are questions about the mobile Office platform for the iPhone. Additionally, at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft revealed their newest gaming product, the Xbox One, and it was met with huge resistance by gamers. Much like their previous flop with Windows 8, the Xbox One appears to be massively consumer unfriendly. Whether or not this is the case once it hits the shelves in November, Microsoft's problems with branding only make Sony (SNE) and Apple (AAPL) look more desirable by comparison.
Those interested in technology shouldn't be the only ones keeping up with Google's (GOOG) developers conference happening this Wednesday through Friday. Anyone interested in where the future of computing will go needs to stay on top of Google I/O this week.

Mobile gaming, wearable computing, tablets, and the smartest phones will be on display and investors with a sharp eye will be able to making more informed decisions about where tech will be trending for the rest of this year and the next.

While there will be plenty of exciting hardware being discussed during the conference, the important thing to remember is that Google's target audience here is software developers. Every technology presented this week will have huge potential to change the tech world, but the most successful will be the ones developers want to create the next killer app on.
Although Hasbro's (HAS) Q1 earning's report showed a loss of $0.05 a share, or $6.67 million, their total revenue went up 2.3% which led to the stock opening higher on Monday and is now at a new high for the year. The loss is reportedly due to restructuring costs, a weak U.S. and European economy, and the rise of mobile and high-tech gaming.

However, this did not stop investors from being bullish about the toy making company. While Hasbro suspects it may need to trim it's workforce over the coming year, and the outlook for it's products such as G.I Joe and Transformers looks pessimistic, there is still potential for major growth if they can diversify into the electronic gaming market.
What is the best way to invest in technology that is growing and changing rapidly? Perhaps the case is not at all, as the massive dip in Microsoft (MSFT) share price might indicate. Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 8, has been met with mixed reviews and tepid sales.

However, the company's woes may actually stem from larger hardware trends in the personal computer market and mobile computing. Ten years ago, a desktop PC needed to simply be replaced after so many years. The hardware simply wasn't keeping up with the newest software.

Today, the most popular software comes in the form of mobile apps, Youtube, and video streaming. Computers today don't need more power than they did a few years ago, and if they do, a lot of the computing power can simply be offloaded onto the cloud. The PC market has slowed dramatically, but only because our need for what they do is also handled by other devices or servers connected to on the Internet.

There is more bad news for J.C Penney Co. (JCP) as Ron Johnson was ousted from his short-lived position as CEO and Myron Ullman was brought back in to help rebuild the funds necessary for the company to make it through the next year. They have also hired bankers from Blackstone LP for advice on how they can fundraise the $1 billion needed to continue on to 2014. J.C. Penney's market capitalization is currently $3.3 billion, but that figure is weighed against the $3 billion in debt it's holding.
The competition for online video streaming services is growing as Time Warner announced it will be offering it's own service to compete with Netflix's market dominance. The service, called Warner Archive Instant, will provide content from Time Warner's archives of movies and TV shows but right now will only be available through computers and Roku set-top boxes (whereas Netflix can be accessed through many more devices). This might add a dimension of competition to the market that Amazon Prime does not.
There is a common adage within Wall Street that goes "Sell in May and Walk Away". Though opinion is mixed as to how true this statement actually is, there are some bears in the market right now who are looking at the historic gains made in March and are expecting nothing less than some serious corrections in the next month. Most notably was David A. Stockman who had a controversial op-ed recently predicting major corrections in the real estate market which has only just shown a period of growth. Even the most optimistic of analysts are expecting some degree of bearishness in the market over the next few months and that it's merely a matter of figuring out which markets will be hit the hardest.
A cup of coffee hasn't been good enough for most people for quite some time now. Even a couple cups are quickly becoming too little for America's morning energy needs, as the continued rise of energy drinks prove. Drinks like Red Bull and 5-hour Energy are being sold seemingly everywhere and eating up a huge share of the beverage market. But with Red Bull GmbH and Living Essentials (Red Bull's and 5-hour Energy's companies, respectively) being privately owned, how can investors find a way to gain from the energy drink craze?

As of now, there are four serious contenders on Wall St. looking to gain a dominating presence within this market. No drink market would get this successful without the two major beverage giants PepsiCo. (PEP) and The Coca-Cola Company (KO) trying to stake their claim, while Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) has it's own brand of energy drinks that aims to be as trendy as their coffees, and lastly, there is Monster (MNST), the smaller company with a head start on everyone else. Right now Pepsi is making huge effort to make their Mountain Dew-related drink Kickstarter to succeed during March Madness, which would pay off with the foothold that it's rival Coca-Cola has been trying to get.

While the drink companies have been around for a long time it is the Energy Drink that is bringing new life to many of these companies.

Boeing (BA) is reportedly losing somewhere around $50 million a week while it's 787 Dreamliner jets are grounded, so it's important news for investors when the company announced on Monday that the test flight with the redesigned batteries "went according to plan". Share price on Tuesday shot up by two percent as the buzz spread of Boeing getting back in the air soon. Still, there are a few more hurdles for the 787 as aviation regulators in Japan and the United States need to examine and clear the newly redesigned planes for commercial travel. The original issue was with the lithium ion batteries that were designed to handle secondary systems of the plane and thus reduce fuel consumption. These batteries overheated and even caused one to smoke, but the exact cause was unknown. The plan right now is to get the all clear from regulators and get their jets back in the sky within weeks, instead of months.
Meanwhile, China was dealing with even more news of environmental woes stemming largely from it’s currently heavy coal-based energy strategy. These two major, and perhaps more importantly competing, international economies are rushing to further develop their domestic energy. China is on it’s way to becoming the world’s biggest oil importer, rumors are spreading about the Keystone XL pipeline being approved in the next few months, and both countries are actively looking into more “green” sources to meet their energy needs.

China is surging in domestic auto sales but also blanketed in thicker and thicker air pollution, which has led to their government offering tax incentives and free license plates to people buying electric or hybrid cars. While this policy only applies to chinese-made electric cars, foreign businesses such as General Motors (GM) and Tesla Motors (TSLA), are hoping this will soon change as the Chevy Volt and the Tesla Roadster have been selling in Beijing. Meanwhile, their solar industry is hitting some road bumps with Suntech, once touted by China’s communist government as the world’s biggest solar panel manufacturer, defaulting on a $541 million dollar bond. How China develops it’s renewable energy industry this year will be noticed by potential investors around the world who will gauge the strength of similar renewable startups.

In America, electric cars are dealing with a metaphorical slow start. Hybrids and electric cars have been in the market for some time now and there is still very little consumer interest to show for it. While the up-and-coming business Tesla and it’s CEO Elon Musk have been generating a lot of hype, it won’t matter unless they can live up to their promises of announcing profit for the first quarter of 2013. If that happens, there is potential for investors to start following Musk’s more ambitious aspirations for a widespread solar grid. His own investment into SolarCity (SCTY) may help undo some of the pessimism caused by the major flop from last year with Solyndra.

Whether the major changes in energy come from oil, solar, or something else, both countries are looking to lead the charge. While the aggressive competition has lead to some missteps and will likely continue to do so, there is incredible potential for growth going forward in energy.

The Japanese yen is sinking as part of what seems to be a deliberate attempt by the Bank of Japan to bolster the country's export-focused economy. While there was some initial political hesitation to flood the country with more yen in order to gain an advantage in the international market, a meeting with G-20 leaders all promising not to decrease their own currencies was the nod needed for the BoJ to go forward with their aggressive plan. While it had the desired effect of bolstering the Nikkei 225 (the index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange), the long-term effects of the weakened yen are yet to be seen.

A Book Review
by Staff Writer Matt Heston

I approached "Laughing at Wall Street" with some trepidation. When I saw a book that offered to "beat the pros" without any formal financial trading, there was that same nagging I get in my head when I see a colorful self-help book or any non-textbook, non-science fiction book with the word quantum in the title. Though the term "too good to be true" is too trite, I did feel like I was looking at a highly exaggerated product. However, I figured if I could get one or two useful pieces of information out of it, then this book would be worth the time.

I was pleasantly surprised when I found that Chris Camillo, the book’s author, took his time and structured the book properly. It was less what he had to say, but how he said it that impressed me. The book is written in a sort of personal style, using anecdotes and very little jargon, which I expected from a book aimed at laymen, but his anecdotes of early successes and missteps in trading aren’t solely used to pad out the book’s length. I’ve read through plenty of similar books meant to entertain while educating where they will commit that very crime, and it was refreshing to read a book that actually had something to say rather than drone on in order to meet a specific word count set by their publisher.

The central premise of the book is that anyone can pick up on market trends and use that to make investment decisions. It was another breath of fresh air to find very few caveats or backtracking involved throughout the book. The author explains his argument and backs it up with multiple sources. Though the cover is pretty flashy, the contents of the book are grounded and it doesn’t oversell itself. This consistency of tone kept me engaged from cover to cover, which is exactly the goal of laymen-oriented books like this. I felt like I could take the knowledge I picked up from this book and start noticing where stocks might be trending.

I think I would have enjoyed this book much less if it outlined any sort of seven-step plan or tried to use any facts or figures to guarantee any certain outcome. I knew exactly what kind of book I was getting into, and was happy to see the author knew what kind of book they were writing. One of the blurbs on the back is “...I’m intrigued. And inspired.” Which I felt was the perfect way to describe “Laughing at Wall Street.” It presents no answers or conclusions, but it very effectively gets the reader excited and thinking about finances and
stock trading. It’s a great start for someone who might be completely uninterested in learning about the subject.
